New Delhi: Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, Council for Laity Secretary, Chevalier Adv. V. C. Sebastian submitted memorandum to the National Minority Commission and requested the Central Government to appoint a commission to study the Christian minority backwardness in India. Memorandum was handed over to Adv. George Kurian, Vice Chairman of National Minority Commission, Delhi.

Laity Council also asked the Central Government to take immediate steps regarding the discrimination against Christian minority community while implementing various Minority Welfare Schemes funded by the Central Government.

Refusing the rights assured in the Constitution of India to the minority communities is unfortunate. The welfare schemes announced for minority communities are now in favour of the ‘majoritarian community’ within the minority. While committees such as the ‘Sachar’ was introduced for the betterment of Muslim community, no effort has been made to form any such committees or commissions to study the living conditions and develop welfare schemes for the Christian communities in India.

Mr. Sebastian appealed to the National Minority Commission that even after submitting several suggestions on this behalf, the fact that the government has stayed dormant, cold, and unbothered is a case of disappointment for Christians in India. He also suggested that the National Minority Commission must take immediate steps for the same.
