Science Day celebrations wrapped up at Amrita School of Biotechnology

1Sci High 2020, an elaborate week-long celebration to commemorate National Science Day organized by Amrita School of Biotechnology, Amritapuri came to end. Two prominent women in the field of science and traditional medicine, Dr. Sonia, Scientist G, Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, and Padmasree Lakshmikutty Amma, known as the poison healer and lovingly called ‘Vanamuthassi’ graced the occasion and symbolically represented the apparently impossible synthesis between modern medicine and traditional practices. Lakshmi Kuttyamma said, “I have been prescribing traditional medicines for snakebite for the past 47 years, making use of traditional knowledge handed down through generations. I can prepare about 500 medicinal treatments from memory. Till now I have not forgotten them. But people come here for poison treatment mainly snake or insect bites”. Prizes were given away to winners of different competitions.

3National science day observed on 28th February every year had ‘women in science’ as a theme emphasizing the need for creating a conducive environment for women pursuing their career in science. ‘Sci High 2020’ was held with a tag line ‘celebrating women in science’ was kick started with an inaugural function on 28th February 2020.

The inagural function was presided over by Dr. Bipin Nair, Dean, Amrita School of Biotechnology. On his inaugural address, he emphasized the need of gender equality in science and mentioned the exemplary role of Amma and the university in furthering that goal. Dr. Krishnasree Achuthan, Dean of Post Graduate Programs at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham who heads the Center for Cybersecurity Systems and Networks and Amrita Technology Business Incubator (Amrita TBI) at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.Dr. Bhavani Rao R. who serves as the UNESCO Chair in Gender Equality & Women’s Empowerment (Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham) and is the Director of AMMACHI Labs, Amrita Multi Modal Applications Using Computer & Human Interaction Labs, at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and Dr Geetha Kumar, Professor at the School of Biotechnology, were honored during the event.

The week long celebrations beginning from the 2nd of March included Quiz competition, Spell-Bee and the interbrains Debate Competition. The events, apart from immersing students to thought provoking ideas, also served as a platform for them to express their views on the current scientific narratives, and all the while keeping it interesting and enjoyable for them.
