Ram Nath Kovind elected as 14th President of India

x19-1497864779-19265162-981952165280218-430557489-n.jpg.pagespeed.icNew Delhi, July 20: NDA Candidate RamNath Kovind has been elected as the 14th President of India, with this victory he becomes second Dalit leader after RK Narayanan since Independence to occupy country’s top post.

After winning the contest, President elect Ram Nath Kovind in his first public address thanked everyone who supported him during the elections.

He also  thanked his rival and former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, and wished well for her future.

Speaking to  media Kovind stressed on that he came from very humble background and it was only because of the strengths of Indian democracy that he has been elected to country’s prominent post.

Briefing to reporters, Kovind stated “This is a very emotional moment, describing his role as new president he said its a very big responsibility for me.

“It is my duty to protect the Constitution and uphold its values as the President. I pay my respects to my countrymen and assure them that I’ll serve the nation in the spirit of ‘Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah’ (May all be happy),” he added.

In the final vote count of 4,986 voters , NDA nominee Kovind clinched 65.5 per cent votes translating into 7,oo,244 electoral college votes, while UPA candidate Meira Kumar attained 34.35 per cent (367,314 votes).

In first round of voting National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) candidate and former Bihar governor Ram Nath Kovind Ram Nath Kovind with 60,683 vote share takes a lead, while opposition nominee Meira Kumar attained 22,941.

Presidential Election was held on July 17,  at 32 polling stations — one in Parliament House and one each in 29 state assemblies and two union territories with assemblies. A total of 776 members of Parliament and 4,120 legislators were eligible to vote.

Nearly 99 per cent voting was recorded for electing the next occupant of the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

President Pranab Mukherjee, term is going to end on July 24.
