Two Texas sheriff’s deputies risked their own lives to save that of another last week, and it was all caught on camera. Near the Southeast Texas town of Winnie, Chambers County deputies Braedon Boznango and Carlton Carrington came upon a vehicle that had rolled over and caught on fire.
The car on State Highway 124 was completely engulfed in flames with an unconscious man on fire in the front seat, according to this report on KPRC, the NBC affiliate from Houston. Officials said the man inside the vehicle was covered in flames all over his legs and stomach area.
Dash cam video shows each deputy arriving to the scene and then trotting through thick grass, with aid from a flashlight, on the side of the road around 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 13.
Then body cameras show one officer breathing and running while a woman’s voice is heard near the car.
“Hurry, sir, hurry, he’s in the car,” the woman said.
“Where, where, where, where, where?” the first deputy asked, sprinting even faster now.
“Here, right here. Can you pull him out?” she responded in a panic. “Can you pull him out?”
The first deputy’s body camera shows the deputy pulling away at a man while heavy, dark smoke plumed from inside the vehicle and flames roaring on the unconscious man.
Boznango is shown trying to pull the burning man from the window, trying to hide panic while communicating with the man inside the vehicle.
“Carlton, I need your help,” Boznango said to his partner.
The two deputies successfully pulled the burning man through the open window of the car, looking as horrific on video as it actually sounds. The deputies placed him in a nearby water puddle to extinguish the fire on his body.
Once deputies determined there was no one else in the car, they moved the man away from the car.
“Boz, let’s try to get him over, away from the car in case it goes,” Carrington said, acknowledging the fire could worsen or an explosion could blast.
They dragged the man to safety. Neither Boznango nor Carrington were injured, but heat from the fire damaged some of their equipment.
The man was taken to an area hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
Winnie is a small town more than an hour east of Houston and 30 minutes southwest of Beaumont. The highway where the deputies saved the man heads south from Winnie to the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.
