Rajasthan: Accused VHP leader arrested in Rakbar Khan lynching case

Jaipur: Nearly three years after Rakbar Khan, 31, was lynched by ‘cow rakshaks’ in Rajasthan’s Alwar, police have finally arrested local VHP leader Naval Kishore Sharma.

According to the Indian Express report, Rakbar’s family had said that Sharma, the head of the VHP cow protection cell of Ramgarh in Alwar, had led the mob that thrashed him to death.

Although the FIR in this case that shook the then BJP government, Sharma was shown to be present on the spot, but it was also said that Sharma had informed the police about the incident.

On receiving the news of Sharma’s arrest, Rakbar’s 30-year-old cousin Haroon said that the VHP leader was the ‘mastermind’. He said, ‘He should have been arrested earlier. But better late than never. Now he should stay in jail and get the harshest punishment.

Alwar SP Tejaswani Gautam said Sharma was arrested on Thursday night. “According to the present Investigating Officer (IO), he has been found guilty of conspiracy and (involvement) in cow protection.”

Alwar Rural Additional SP IO Shriman Meena declined to elaborate on the investigation.

Special Public Prosecutor Ashok Kumar Sharma said the arrest was made after discovering additional evidence, including telephone messages of Sharma.

He said, ‘They were being investigated for a long time. Second, he was part of a criminal conspiracy. He was giving information by misleading the police, yet everything was happening under his supervision. He pretended that he was with the police and helping them.

The prosecutor said that Sharma has been sent to 10-day custody.

Let us tell you that on July 20, 2018, Rakbar Khan and his friend Aslam Khan were attacked by a mob in Lalvandi under Ramgarh police station area in Alwar district of Rajasthan.

Rakbar and Aslam were taking the cows on foot from a village in Alwar to their home in Kolgaon in Nuh district of Haryana. Kolgaon is 12 kms from Lalvandi.

During this Aslam managed to escape, but Rakbar’s mob thrashed him brutally. He died within a few hours of this.

In this case, IPC sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 341 (wrongful restraint), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt to any person), 302 (murder) and 34 (assault by several persons with common intention) of the IPC. FIR was registered under

In this case four people Paramjit Singh, Dharmendra, Naresh and Vijay were arrested and charge sheet was filed against them.

According to the Indian Express report, the final hearing is yet to take place in this matter. At the same time, Paramjeet and Naresh are out on bail.

In February this year, Rakbar’s family had  filed a petition before Alwar District and Sessions Judge Sangeeta Sharma, alleging favoritism on the court, seeking transfer of the case to another court. But the court rejected this petition and advised to appeal in the High Court.

It was said that Naval Kishore Sharma, leader of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s (VHP) cow protector cell in Alwar, led the mob.

Local BJP MLA Gyandev Ahuja  is also said to be involved in this case  , who was later promoted to the post of BJP’s vice-president in Rajasthan.
