‘BRICS IN THE WORLD SUMMIT: A STRATEGIC AND POLITICAL VIEW’ conference was held at The Plaza Hotel, New York City on 7th April, 2014. This conference was co-hosted by United Nations Association of Brazil, Forum das Americas and the M&A Advisor.

BRICS is the acronym for an association of five major emerging national economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The grouping was originally known as “BRIC” before the inclusion of South Africa in 2010.

The BRICS members are all developing or newly industrialized countries, but they are distinguished by their large, fast-growing economies and significant influence on regional and global affairs.

In 2012, Hu Jintao, who at the time was President of China, described the BRICS countries as defenders and promoters of developing countries and a force for world peace.

As of 2013, the five BRICS countries represent almost 3 billion people, with a combined nominal GDP of US$16.039 trillion and an estimated US$4 trillion in combined foreign reserves. Presently, South Africa holds the chair of the BRICS group, having hosted the group’s fifth summit in 2013.

David Fergusson (President, The M&A Advisor Co-Chair, International Financial Forum) delivered the welcome speech.

Mario Garnero gave opening Address ‘The BRICS In The World’. He is the Founder & Chairman of the Board, Brasilinvest Group. He also serves as the President, Fórum das Américas & United Nations Association of Brazil.

Ambassador Antonio Patriota |Permanent Representative of Brazil to the United Nations gave the Opening Remarks to the BRICS Congress.

The following dignitaries spoke at the BRICS Congress Panels. Patrick Zhong (Senior Managing Director, Fosun Group, President, China Momentum Fund), David Iakobachvili (Vice-President of the Russian Union of Entrepreneurs and Industrialists), Deborah Calmeyer (CEO, Roar Africa), Ricardo Ferraço (Brazilian Senator, President of the Commission of External Relations and National Defense of the Senate), Ambassador Asoke Kumar Mukerji (Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations), Sanjay Sarma (Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Founder and Former CTO of OATSystems India),
Henrietta Holsman Fore | Chairman and CEO, Holsman International, Former Administrator of the US Agency for International Development), Corrado Clini (Former Minister of Environment, Land and Sea, Italy, Chair, Global Bioenergy Partnership).

Luncheon Introduction was made by Ambassador Ana Lucy Cabral Petersen (Consul General of Brazil in New York) and followed by the Keynote Address made by Hon. Michel Temer (Vice President of Brazil).
