\"\"<\/a>OTTAWA | Going nose-to-nose with protesters in some cases, police began arresting people and towing away trucks Friday in a bid to break the three-week, traffic-snarling siege of Canada\u2019s capital by hundreds of truckers angry over the country\u2019s COVID-19 restrictions.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of officers descended into the protest zone and led demonstrators away in handcuffs through Ottawa\u2019s newly snow-covered streets as drivers blared their horns in defiance. Scuffles broke out in front of a downtown hotel, and members of the crowd began singing the national anthem, \u201cO Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tow truck operators \u2014 wearing neon-green ski masks, with their companies\u2019 decals taped over on their trucks to conceal their identities \u2014 arrived under police escort and set to work removing the big rigs, campers and other vehicles parked bumper to bumper and shoulder to shoulder near Parliament.<\/p>\n

While some protesters surrendered, many remained defiant as the crackdown unfolded.<\/p>\n

\u201cFreedom was never free,\u201d said trucker Kevin Homaund, of Montreal. \u201cSo what if they put the handcuffs on us and they put us in jail?\u201d<\/p>\n

Police made their first move to end the occupation late Thursday with the arrest of two key protest leaders. They also sealed off much of the downtown area to outsiders to prevent them from coming to the aid of the self-styled Freedom Convoy protesters.<\/p>\n

Over the past weeks, authorities had hesitated to move against many of the protesters around the country, in part for fear of violence. The demonstrations have drawn right-wing extremists and veterans, some of them armed.<\/p>\n

With police and the government facing accusations that they let the protests gain strength and spread, Trudeau on Monday invoked Canada\u2019s Emergencies Act, giving law enforcement extraordinary authority to declare the blockades illegal, tow away trucks, arrest the drivers, suspend their licenses and freeze their bank accounts.<\/p>\n

The emergency law also enabled law enforcement authorities to compel tow truck companies to assist. Ottawa police said earlier that they couldn\u2019t find tow truck drivers willing to help because they either sympathized with the movement or feared retaliation.<\/p>\n

As police worked to dismantle the siege, Pat King, one of the protest leaders in Ottawa, told truckers, \u201cPlease stay peaceful,\u201d while also threatening the livelihoods of the tow truck operators.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are committing career suicide,\u201d King warned on Facebook. \u201cWe know where the trucks came from.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ottawa police had made it clear on Thursday they were preparing to end the protest and remove the more than 300 trucks, with the city\u2019s interim police chief warning: \u201cAction is imminent.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some officers carried automatic weapons and wore tactical unit uniforms. Even as the operation unfolded, police issued yet another round of warnings to the truckers, giving them a last chance to leave.<\/p>\n

But despite warnings to leave posted by police on social media, a few protesters danced in the streets to the Beastie Boys anthem \u201d(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)\u201d and Bob Marley\u2019s \u201cGet Up, Stand Up,\u201d while shouting, \u201cFreedom!\u201d<\/p>\n

The two protest leaders under arrest were due in court Friday. Among the charges: mischief and obstructing police.<\/p>\n

The occupation infuriated many Ottawa residents, who complained of being harassed and intimidated on the streets and obtained a court injunction to stop the truckers\u2019 incessant honking of their horns.<\/p>\n

The demonstrations around the country by protesters in trucks, tractors and motor homes initially focused on Canada\u2019s vaccine requirement for truckers entering the country but soon morphed into a broad attack on COVID-19 precautions and Trudeau\u2019s government.<\/p>\n

Trudeau portrayed the protesters as member of a \u201cfringe\u201d element, and Canadians have largely embraced the country\u2019s COVID-19 restrictions, with the vast majority of the population vaccinated, including an estimated 90% of the nation\u2019s truckers. Some of the vaccine and mask mandates imposed by the provinces are already falling away rapidly.<\/p>\n

The biggest border blockade, at the Ambassador Bridge between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, disrupted the flow of auto parts between the two countries and forced the industry to curtail production. Authorities lifted the siege last weekend after arresting dozens of protesters.<\/p>\n

The final border blockade, in Manitoba, across from North Dakota, ended peacefully on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The protests have been cheered on and received donations from conservatives in the U.S.<\/p>\n
