Dispur: With the official announcement of the results of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, the process of forming a new government in the state has intensified. In this regard, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, along with his entire cabinet, has submitted his resignation to Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya. The Governor has accepted his resignation and requested him to continue as acting Chief Minister until the new government takes office.<\/p>\n
The Chief Minister has clarified that the date for the swearing-in ceremony is expected to be determined after May 11. To ensure the proper completion of this process, the top leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party has appointed J.P. Nadda and Nayab Singh Saini as observers. These two senior leaders will preside over the meeting of the newly elected MLAs, where the leader of the legislative party will be formally selected. Sarma has also specially invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to this historic occasion so that he can witness the formation of the new government.<\/p>\n
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has achieved a historic victory in the 126-member Assembly elections. The BJP alone secured a clear majority in the House by winning 82 seats, a testament to the unwavering faith of the people of the state. On the other hand, the main opposition party, the Congress, was reduced to just 19 seats. Among regional parties, the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People’s Front performed respectably, winning 10 seats each, while the AIUDF and the Raijor Dal secured two seats each. The Trinamool Congress also made its presence felt in the state by winning one seat.<\/p>\n
The BJP’s third consecutive victory in Assam has become a topic of discussion in political circles. Experts believe that the development work, strong law and order, and effective implementation of public welfare schemes during Himanta Biswa Sarma’s tenure have brought the party to this position.
