Taking place amid recent election results and changing political dynamics, this meeting is expected to be quite different from previous meetings.

The meeting is being held at the historic Constitution Club in New Delhi, the capital. According to senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, this gathering of opposition parties, dubbed the “India Janbandhan ” meeting, will begin at 12 noon.

Even though some differences have emerged in the opposition camp in recent days, the Congress has clarified that 23 political parties have confirmed their participation in the meeting.

Major parties: Trinamool Congress (TMC), Samajwadi Party (SP), Shiv Sena (UBT), Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), National Conference (NC), CPI(M), RJD (RJD), PDP, CPI (CPI), and Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK).

Other allies: Parties like CPI-ML, RSP, VCK, MDMK, All India Forward Bloc and Assam Jatiya Parishad are also joining.

Senior leaders to gather: In this meeting, many big faces of the opposition including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, TMC chief Mamata Banerjee, her nephew Abhishek Banerjee, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Left leader John Brittas and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti will be seen on one platform.

This time, amid claims of opposition unity, there have been some major setbacks, with two major parties distancing themselves from the meeting:

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK): The DMK has officially boycotted the meeting due to the controversy that arose after the recently concluded Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Following the elections, Congress supported actor Vijay’s new party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), to form the government. The DMK has called this a betrayal and a stab in the back of its decades-old alliance. The party says its workers’ sentiments have been hurt, so it will not attend any meeting where Congress is present.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP): Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party has also decided to distance itself from the meeting and is not attending it.

According to the alliance leaders, the main objective of this meeting is to prepare a common strategy against the current political situation of the country and anti-people policies.

The meeting is likely to focus on developing a strategy to block the Delimitation Bill being introduced by the central government , as this constitutional amendment bill requires a two-thirds majority to pass. Furthermore, the outline for the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament, the misuse of central agencies against opposition leaders, student issues, and alleged violations of democratic rights in the country will be discussed. TMC chief Mamata Banerjee may also propose a “one candidate per seat” formula against the BJP in the upcoming 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

Since the inception of the ‘India’ Coalition, several important meetings have taken place, which shaped the framework and common agenda of the Coalition:

First meeting (Patna): The first official meeting to lay the foundation of opposition unity was held in Patna, Bihar, in which all the parties agreed to contest the elections together.

Second meeting (Bengaluru): It was in this meeting held in Bengaluru, Karnataka that the opposition front was officially named ‘ INDIA’ (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance).

Third meeting (Mumbai): In the third meeting held in Mumbai, Maharashtra, the alliance’s common logo, formation of the Coordination Committee and the seat-sharing formula were discussed in detail.

Fourth and other meetings (New Delhi): During the meetings held in Delhi, a framework was prepared for the alliance’s common manifesto, Common Minimum Programme (CMP) and organising nationwide joint rallies to send a strong message to the public against the policies of the Central Government.

New Delhi: A crucial and highly anticipated meeting of the “India” alliance is scheduled for Monday, June 8, 2026, to strengthen opposition unity against the NDA government at the center.
