AIADMK MLAs who defied the party whip during the recent no-confidence motion against the ruling Tamil Nadu Vetti Kazhagam (TVK) government now face the serious threat of being disqualified from the assembly. Four rebel AIADMK MLAs—Isaki Subbaiah, P. Sathyabama, M. Maragatham Kumaravel, and S. Jayakumar—defied party directives and voted in favor of the government led by Chief Minister Vijay C. Joseph.

Following this open rebellion by the MLAs, Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker JCD Prabhakar has taken strict action. He has formally initiated disqualification proceedings against the four MLAs for defying the party whip and under the anti-defection law. The Speaker clarified that this legal action against the four MLAs is being taken based on official petitions and complaints filed by the main opposition party, the AIADMK.

This entire controversy began during the no-confidence motion against the TVK government in the Assembly. At that time, a major dissent emerged within the AIADMK, and a large faction of 25 rebel MLAs voted in support of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, saving his government from collapse. However, according to an official order issued by the AIADMK’s Chief Whip, it was absolutely mandatory for all party MLAs to vote in favor of the no-confidence motion (i.e., against the government). The violation of the whip has rocked Tamil Nadu politics ever since.

To avoid serious legal action, including disqualification and a ban on contesting future elections, these four rebel MLAs, in a deliberate strategy, submitted their resignations to the Speaker of the Assembly. Soon after, these four leaders formally joined the ruling TVK party. Meanwhile, the fate of the remaining 21 rebel MLAs is almost sealed. After AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami accepted the rebel faction’s apology and request for reconciliation, Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar decided not to proceed with disqualification proceedings against the remaining 21 MLAs. However, since this incident, many grassroots officials and workers of the AIADMK have been steadily leaving the party and joining the ruling TVK, dealing a major organizational blow to the main opposition party in the state.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu politics is currently witnessing a period of significant upheaval and legal wrangling.
