\"\"Mumbai:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0The Maharashtra government has officially moved forward to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state. Under this initiative, the government will first form an expert committee, which will conduct a thorough study of the current personal laws and prepare a comprehensive draft of the UCC suitable for Maharashtra. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has indicated that the formation of this expert committee may be officially announced next week during the ongoing monsoon session of the Legislative Assembly. Following this policy decision by the government, ideological fervor and debate regarding the UCC has intensified in the state’s political circles.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, explaining the basis for this historic move, said that the idea of \u200b\u200ba Uniform Civil Code is a vital part of the Directive Principles of our Constitution, and that the architect of the Constitution, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, was a strong advocate of it. He clarified that the implementation of the UCC will establish a uniform legal system for all sections of society in civil matters such as marriage, divorce, property inheritance, and adoption, thereby strengthening constitutional uniformity. It is noteworthy that Uttarakhand has become the first state in the country to implement the UCC since independence, and the Maharashtra government will closely study the legislative experiences and individual reforms of Uttarakhand, as well as states like Gujarat and Assam, while drafting its own draft.<\/span><\/p>\n

The main opposition party, Congress, has responded cautiously to the government’s decision. Congress leader Sachin Sawant stated that the country’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, played a significant role in incorporating the Uniform Civil Code into the Constitution, a fact the government should have mentioned. He strongly demanded that a sensitive code like the UCC not be used solely for political polarization or electoral gain. According to the Congress, before finalizing the draft of this law, there should be extensive and transparent discussions with legal experts, top lawyers, enlightened representatives of various religious communities, and all stakeholders. If the draft is inclusive and constructive, the Congress will support it.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other hand, Shiv Sena, part of the ruling coalition, has openly welcomed the decision. Shiv Sena leader Manisha Kayande said that the Uniform Civil Code has always been a core ideological priority of her party. She recalled that the late Bal Thackeray had forged a strong ideological consensus on the construction of the Ram Temple, the abrogation of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, and the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code across the country.
