\"\"<\/a>New Delhi: The controversy surrounding the functioning of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar and the Election Commission continues unabated. Protests by the Congress and other opposition parties are becoming increasingly intense.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has clarified the party\u2019s position, putting forward three key demands and making it clear that the party will not back down on these issues.<\/p>\n

According to the Congress President, the party\u2019s first and foremost demand is the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.<\/p>\n

The second demand is to completely scrap the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which the Congress alleges could lead to the deletion of the names of genuine voters.<\/p>\n

The third demand is to revert to voting through ballot papers instead of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), with the Congress arguing that this would help ensure greater transparency in the electoral process.<\/p>\n

Congress workers, allies of the INDIA bloc, and members of various civil society and youth organisations have taken to the streets over these issues. Protests are continuing at Jantar Mantar in the national capital.<\/p>\n

On Monday, workers of the National Students\u2019 Union of India (NSUI) staged a symbolic protest by lying on the ground covered with white sheets. Through the demonstration, they questioned why the names of citizens were being removed from electoral rolls while those citizens were still alive.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has rejected the allegations against it, maintaining that the purpose of the SIR is solely to ensure accurate and error-free electoral rolls by removing the names of ineligible, duplicate or deceased voters. It has also described differences within the organisation as part of the normal administrative process.<\/p>\n
