New Delhi: More than 300 MPs from opposition parties staged a massive march from Parliament to Nirvachan Sadan on Tuesday, demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the SIR process. Ahead of the planned march, Delhi Police tightened security at Vijay Chowk and around the Election Commission\u2019s headquarters, installing multiple layers of barricades.<\/p>\n
The march, which began at the Makar Gate of Parliament House under the banner of the INDIA alliance, headed towards Nirvachan Sadan. After security forces stopped them, opposition MPs staged a sit-in protest on the street. During the protest, Rahul Gandhi alleged that the police were obstructing and threatening them. He questioned why leaders representing millions of Indians were not being allowed to meet the Election Commissioners. Gandhi also said that no one responsible for what had been done to the country would be spared.<\/p>\n
Police officials directed Indian Youth Congress and NSUI activists gathered outside Akashvani Bhavan to vacate the area. They clarified that prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS were in effect and that such gatherings were illegal. Police detained some activists who failed to comply with the order and transported them away by bus. Meanwhile, fierce clashes broke out between security personnel and protesters during the demonstration.<\/p>\n
Reacting sharply to the protest by Congress and other opposition parties, BJP MP Jagadish Shettar launched a scathing attack on Rahul Gandhi. He said that the opposition had no concrete issues left to raise and was therefore resorting to political propaganda. Shettar maintained that the SIR was a completely fair process and that all matters relating to Forms 6 and 7 were already pending before the Supreme Court. He alleged that the opposition was creating unnecessary problems and spreading propaganda against the Constitution and legal processes.<\/p>\n
During the protest, MP Durai Vaiko demanded the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. He alleged that the entire opposition, except for a few parties, was united against the CEC\u2019s unilateral and unconstitutional decisions.<\/p>\n
Congress MP Renuka Chowdhary also questioned the electoral process, claiming that ordinary citizens were being deprived of their right to vote and other constitutional rights.
