The Ministry emphasised that India’s strong democratic institutions, independent judiciary, and free media are fully equipped to protect these rights. It described the comments made by the UN human rights body as completely unwarranted and unacceptable interference in India’s internal affairs.

The official spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement clarifying that, as in any mature democracy, Indian citizens exercise their constitutional rights within an established legal framework designed to maintain public order, peace, and security.

The Ministry asserted that all law enforcement agencies and police officers in India operate impartially and strictly in accordance with the laws of the land. Furthermore, the country’s independent courts are accessible to every citizen seeking judicial redress for grievances. In this context, the Ministry described the concerns expressed by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights as completely baseless and without merit.

The Ministry of External Affairs also sharply criticised what it described as the selective approach and double standards adopted by international human rights organisations.

The Ministry alleged that the Office of the High Commissioner has consistently been selective in its public responses to human rights issues. It claimed that the organisation had remained silent on violent protests in India’s neighbouring countries and the forceful responses of their governments. It further alleged that the UN body had failed to comment on harsh measures taken by law enforcement agencies in Western countries.

The Ministry emphasised that such double standards undermine the credibility and reliability of international human rights organisations and weaken public trust in multilateral institutions.

New Delhi: The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has strongly objected to comments made by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) regarding the recent protests in the national capital, New Delhi.
