Government and private offices in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) have been directed to operate with only 50 per cent of their employees working on-site, while the remaining staff will work from home.

The CAQM issued the order on October 30. The arrangement applies to all government and private offices where employees can work remotely. However, industrial establishments and essential services where work-from-home arrangements are not feasible have been exempted from the directive.

Additionally, the commission has imposed a temporary ban on open construction and demolition activities across Delhi-NCR. The restrictions will remain in effect from November 5 to November 20 and will apply to Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Sonipat, Ghaziabad and Noida.

However, projects of essential public and national importance have been exempted from the ban. Construction activities related to railways, metro services, airports, interstate bus terminals, hospitals, water supply and sanitation facilities will be allowed to continue.

Projects associated with national security and defence have also been exempted from the restrictions to ensure that critical infrastructure development remains unaffected.

The CAQM stated that these measures have been introduced as a precautionary step to prevent a further deterioration in air quality across Delhi-NCR.

According to the commission, changing weather conditions could contribute to a rise in pollution levels in the coming days. Therefore, the restrictions are being implemented for a limited period in designated areas to minimise pollution and protect public health.

The commission also clarified that essential services would remain unaffected by the restrictions to avoid disruptions to critical public facilities and operations.

Meanwhile, Delhi-NCR has witnessed a significant improvement in air quality following heavy rainfall over the past two days.

According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 60 on Friday, making it the city’s cleanest October day since October 10, 2022.

Of the 54 air quality monitoring stations across Delhi, 33 recorded air quality in the “satisfactory” category, 17 in the “good” category and four in the “moderate” category.

The Lodhi Road area recorded the cleanest air in the city, with an AQI of 33, placing it firmly in the “good” category. In contrast, Pusa recorded the highest AQI in Delhi at 105, falling within the “moderate” category.

Despite the improvement in air quality following the rainfall, authorities remain concerned about the possibility of pollution levels rising again as weather conditions change.

The CAQM’s decision to introduce work-from-home arrangements and temporarily suspend construction activities is aimed at reducing pollution-generating activities before air quality deteriorates further.

The restrictions are expected to help limit dust emissions from construction sites and reduce vehicular traffic associated with daily office commuting.

The commission’s measures reflect a preventive approach to managing air pollution in Delhi-NCR, particularly during the period when changing weather patterns can contribute to the accumulation of pollutants in the atmosphere.

New Delhi: In view of the possibility of worsening air pollution in Delhi-NCR, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has announced several important measures to control pollution levels.
