Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast isolated heavy rainfall in Kerala from November 6 to 8, according to a Malayalam Daily News report published on November 5. Thunderstorms and strong winds of 30\u201340 kilometres per hour are also possible.<\/p>\n

The report attributes the forecast to atmospheric disturbances over the Bay of Bengal and surrounding areas. A deep depression was reported over eastern Telangana and coastal Andhra Pradesh, with the system expected to move north and develop into a stronger low-pressure area. Cyclonic circulations were also reported over Lakshadweep and nearby areas and over southern Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n

Yellow alerts were announced for Idukki and Ernakulam on November 6; Pathanamthitta and Kottayam on November 7; and Alappuzha, Kottayam and Ernakulam on November 8. Isolated heavy rain was expected in those districts, while thunderstorms were also possible elsewhere in the state.<\/p>\n

The IMD defines heavy rainfall as 64.5 to 115.5 millimetres in 24 hours. Intense rain over a short period can cause waterlogging in low-lying areas and traffic disruption in towns. Residents of hilly areas, especially places vulnerable to landslides, were advised to remain alert. Rising water levels in rivers and streams could make travel hazardous.<\/p>\n

The report urged people to avoid open spaces and sheltering beneath trees during lightning, take care around electrical equipment and bodies of water, and move to safe buildings when working outdoors. Strong winds could break tree branches and damage weak structures. Drivers were advised not to travel through flooded roads.<\/p>\n
