Preliminary reports raised fears of fatalities, but the report explicitly stated that no official death toll had been confirmed. The exact condition of those involved and the number missing were still awaiting official clarification.

Heavy rainfall had raised water levels in lakes and low-lying areas of Khammam district. Five fishermen were reportedly stranded in the middle of the lake after going fishing despite the high water and strong currents. Local authorities began a rescue operation when they learned the fishermen could not return safely to shore.

Three firefighters initially entered the lake in a boat but also encountered dangerous currents. Authorities then dispatched a larger rescue team consisting of six State Disaster Response Force personnel and four firefighters from Kothagudem. The ten-member team entered the lake in two boats to reach both the stranded fishermen and the first group of rescuers.

As the boats moved toward the middle of the lake, the strong current reportedly caused both to lose control and capsize, throwing the rescuers into the water. The National Disaster Response Force was subsequently deployed to help locate those involved and evacuate people still stranded in the lake.

The high water level, swift current and adverse weather were reported to be hindering the search. The incident highlighted the risks faced by emergency personnel during flood rescues and the importance of appropriate equipment and safety precautions. The report also urged the public to exercise extreme caution near flooded waterways.

This account reflects information in the original report; the fate of the rescuers was not officially confirmed in that report.

n

Original Malayalam report: Malayalam Daily News

Khammam, Telangana: Two boats carrying rescue personnel reportedly capsized in strong currents during an attempt to reach five fishermen stranded in Bethupalli Lake in Sathupalli mandal, Khammam district, according to a Malayalam Daily News report published on November 5.
