The company is converting jet engines formerly used in retired Boeing airplanes to generate electricity. Reports released on November 3 indicate that eight such jet engine turbines have been installed at the xAI power generation facility in Southaven, Mississippi. The electricity generated is used to operate the nearby Colossus 2 AI data center in Memphis.

The project utilizes General Electric jet engine technology that was used in airplanes including the Boeing 747. The aviation engines, which normally run on jet fuel, have been adapted to operate on natural gas. Instead of producing thrust to propel an aircraft forward, the turbine’s power now drives generators to produce electricity. Each turbine reportedly has the capacity to generate approximately 50 megawatts of power. With all eight turbines combined, the maximum generating capacity reaches about 400 megawatts, which is equivalent to the electricity needs of approximately 1.20 lakh (120,000) homes. However, this figure represents peak capacity, and there is no verification that the turbines sustain this output continuously.

Operating AI systems requires thousands of high-performance computer processors and extensive cooling infrastructure, all consuming large amounts of electricity. In many parts of the United States, new data centers face multi-year delays in securing necessary power from public electricity grids. To overcome this challenge, large technology companies are attempting to produce their own electricity by repurposing engines removed from airplanes.

Meanwhile, using old jet engines for electricity generation has raised environmental concerns. Environmental groups warn that these engines are less efficient compared to newer gas turbines and may emit higher levels of pollutants, including carbon monoxide. Legal actions against the Mississippi project continue. A hearing to consider an appeal against the permanent power plant permit granted in March is scheduled for November 9. The company plans to replace the temporary turbines with a 1.2-gigawatt power plant consisting of 41 permanent gas turbines. The company had earlier announced that 69 existing temporary mobile turbines would be removed by July 2027.

A distinctive feature of this project is that engines once used to power aircraft in flight are now employed to supply electricity to highly powerful AI supercomputers on the ground. However, the initiative also raises the question of how to balance electricity production with environmental protection in the era of the AI revolution.

n

Original Malayalam report: Malayalam Daily News

Memphis (Tennessee): To meet the rising electricity demand associated with the growth of artificial intelligence technology, Elon Musk’s xAI company has adopted an unusual approach.
