Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced that production of Tesla’s Cybertruck, which has attracted significant attention in the global electric vehicle market, will be phased out by mid-2027 at the Gigafactory in Texas. This decisive move is aimed at increasing production of the new driverless Cybercab. Musk made the announcement on the night of November 5 via the social media platform X. He clarified that production of the Cybertruck at the Texas Gigafactory will be gradually wound down by mid-next year to make more facilities available for Cybercab production.
The Cybertruck, first introduced in 2019, reached customers only by the end of 2023 after multiple delays. Featuring a stainless steel body, unique design, and advanced technology, the vehicle had garnered worldwide attention. However, the Cybertruck failed to achieve the expected market success. Musk’s initial expectation was to sell 250,000 vehicles annually. In reality, approximately 38,965 Cybertrucks were sold in the United States in 2024, but sales dropped to 20,237 in 2025—an approximate 48 percent decline. High price points, unconventional design, quality-related complaints, and repeated recalls due to safety concerns adversely affected the vehicle’s sales performance.
Meanwhile, Tesla’s future plans are increasingly centered on the Cybercab, a robotic taxi designed for two passengers, operating autonomously without a steering wheel or pedals. Tesla aims to revolutionize transportation using artificial intelligence and autonomous vehicle technology.
Musk has not yet clarified whether Cybertruck production will be moved to another factory or if the model will be completely withdrawn from the market. The recent announcement reflects a shift in the company’s priorities from the Cybertruck to autonomous vehicles, which were once Tesla’s most high-profile future vehicle.
This move is seen as a significant step in Elon Musk’s long-term plan to transform Tesla from an electric vehicle manufacturer into a technology company focused more on artificial intelligence, robotics, and driverless transportation systems.
