Karur stampede: 40 dead so far, actor Vijay’s party TVK moves Madras High Court seeking CBI probe

Chennai: Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), has approached the Madras High Court seeking an independent and transparent inquiry into the stampede in Karur that claimed the lives of 40 people. A person injured in the stampede filed a petition in the Madras High Court on Sunday, requesting that the Director General of Police (DGP) be directed not to allow TVK and its leader Vijay to hold any public meeting, rally, or political gathering until the incident is investigated. TVK Deputy General Secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar said on Sunday that the party’s petition has been listed for urgent hearing before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday at 2:15 pm.

Nirmal Kumar told reporters that their petition seeking a fair and transparent investigation into the Karur tragedy will be heard before the Madurai bench on September 29th at noon. Earlier, a team of TVK lawyers led by Nirmal Kumar visited Justice M. Dhandapani’s residence and urged judicial intervention to ensure justice for the victims. The team requested the court to order an independent investigation.

Following the stampede in Karur, Tamilaga Vittra Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay has made a significant announcement. He stated that the families of those killed in the rally will receive financial assistance of ₹20 lakh each. Chief Minister MK Stalin had previously announced ₹10 lakh for the families of the deceased.

PM Modi announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund to the families of those killed in the unfortunate incident at a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The injured will receive ₹50,000.
