Tamil Nadu ‘cash for jobs’ scam; ₹888 crore recovered

Chennai: The “Cash for Jobs” scam is currently dominating Tamil Nadu politics. The issue has sparked a political uproar, with accusations and counter-accusations rife. Following the revelations, the BJP has launched a front against the state government. In this context, BJP leader K. Annamalai on Wednesday attacked the DMK government, saying the party has become a symbol of corruption. Annamalai shared a post on Instagram, citing two news articles, claiming a massive “cash for jobs” scam involving 2,538 positions in the Municipal Administration and Water Supply (MAWS) department. It is alleged that candidates were extorted ₹3.5 million in bribes for each position.

He further explained that 1.12 lakh candidates had applied for these positions in early 2024, but thousands of qualified young people were denied opportunities because they could not afford the hefty fees. Annamalai stressed that this latest revelation is not an isolated incident, but a worrying part of the systemic corruption prevalent under Chief Minister MK Stalin’s rule.

In the post, Annamalai wrote that the Stalin-led DMK government is unleashing one scam after another. Now, the ED has uncovered another major scandal. The brazen “cash for jobs” scam involving 2,538 posts in the MAWS department, where bribes of ₹3.5 million were taken per post. Thousands of hardworking young people, among the 112,000 applicants in 2024, have had their dreams crushed simply because they couldn’t afford the lure. This ₹888 crore scam is part of the systematic corruption that has been the hallmark of the Stalin regime.

The BJP leader accused the DMK of running a “corruption network.” He mentioned that on August 6, 2025, Chief Minister Stalin celebrated “job creation” by handing out appointment letters to candidates and posing for photographs. According to Annamalai, these positions were sold through widespread corruption involving hawala networks. The ED uncovered a “systematic corruption network” in the department during its investigation into a bank fraud case involving Minister KN Nehru’s brother, N Ravichandran, and his True Value Homes (TVH) group.

Annamalai demanded answers from Stalin and his administration and called for a CBI investigation under judicial supervision. In the post, he wrote that it was ironic that Stalin himself handed out letters to these candidates, but in reality, the positions were sold through the rife of hawala and corruption. A CBI investigation is necessary to ensure justice for the people of Tamil Nadu, who are fed up with the DMK’s repeated scams.
