100 days have passed since former Vice President Dhankhar’s sudden resignation; Congress demands a respectful farewell

New Delhi:  The Congress once again raised the issue of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation and demanded that he deserves at least a farewell. The Congress on Wednesday said that Dhankhar has remained completely silent for 100 days since his resignation. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said that it has been exactly 100 days since an incident in Indian political history, which has never happened before.

“Suddenly and shockingly, late on July 21st, Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned. It was clear he was forced to do so – even though he used to praise the PM day and night,” Ramesh said on X. The Congress leader said that for 100 days, the former Vice President, who used to be in the headlines every day, has been completely silent – unseen and unheard. Ramesh further said that the former Vice President, as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, was not a good friend of the opposition.

The Congress general secretary further said, “He consistently and unfairly criticized the opposition. Yet, in keeping with democratic traditions, the opposition is saying that he deserves at least a farewell function, as was the case with all his predecessors. This has not happened.” Following Dhankhar’s resignation, the Congress claimed that the reasons behind his resignation from the post of Vice President went deeper than the health problems he had stated. The opposition party also asked the government to explain Dhankhar’s resignation.

In a sudden move, Dhankhar resigned from his post on July 21, citing health reasons. He sent his resignation to President Draupadi Murmu, stating that he was stepping down immediately. Dhankhar, 74, assumed office in August 2022 and his term was until 2027. He was also the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha and resigned on the first day of Parliament’s monsoon session. During his crucial tenure as Rajya Sabha Chairman, Dhankhar clashed several times with the opposition, which even introduced a motion to impeach him. This motion, the first to remove a Vice President in independent India, was later rejected by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh.
