Amid IndiGo crisis, the government issued a stern warning of action if overcharging is found

New Delhi:   The Civil Aviation Ministry has taken seriously concerns about abnormally high airfares being charged by some airlines in the wake of the IndiGo crisis. The central government on Saturday issued instructions to all airlines not to charge passengers fares in excess of the prescribed limit. The government has stated that action will be taken if they do so.

Passengers are facing numerous difficulties due to IndiGo’s operational problems. This has also led to a steep increase in airfares. The Ministry stated that in order to protect passengers from any form of profiteering, it has exercised its regulatory powers to ensure fair and reasonable fares on all affected routes.

The central government has announced that an official directive has been issued to all airlines mandating strict adherence to the prescribed fare limits. According to a ministry statement, these limits will remain in effect until the situation stabilizes completely. The ministry stated that the directive aims to maintain pricing discipline in the market, prevent any exploitation of distressed passengers, and ensure that citizens who need to travel urgently—including senior citizens, students, and patients—do not face financial hardship during this period.

IndiGo is the country’s largest airline in terms of domestic flights. It holds approximately 60% of the domestic market. IndiGo has canceled more than 2,000 flights in the past five days. As a result, passengers are facing a host of problems, including increased fares.
