Imran Masood, the prominent Congress MP from Saharanpur, responded to a question by advocating for Priyanka Gandhi to be made Prime Minister. Robert Vadra responded to this statement by saying that Priyanka is in demand across the country.
New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, is considered a natural contender for the post of Prime Minister in the country’s largest opposition party, the Congress. However, in recent times, his sister and MP Priyanka Gandhi’s stature has been steadily rising through her political activities. A statement on Priyanka Gandhi by Imran Masood, the popular Congress MP from Saharanpur, and her husband Robert Vadra’s response to it created a storm in political circles.
When asked about Priyanka Gandhi’s raising the Gaza issue and her silence on the persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh, MP Masood said, “Make Priyanka Gandhi the Prime Minister, and then see how she responds like Indira Gandhi. Indira Gandhi divided Pakistan into two parts; Priyanka will also do so that Bangladesh will not become a hotbed of hostility to India.” When asked what Rahul Gandhi will do when Priyanka becomes Prime Minister, he said, “I want to make sure that I am not a Prime Minister.”
Masood responded, “Don’t see the two siblings as separate; they are Indira Gandhi’s grandchildren, two eyes on one face.” However, after the statement sparked controversy, Masood clarified that his statement was being unnecessarily distorted. The leadership within the Congress party is clear; Rahul Gandhi is their most respected leader, and Priyanka Gandhi is also part of that leadership.
Following Imran Masood’s statement, Priyanka Gandhi’s husband, Robert Vadra, said that she (Priyanka) is in demand across the country. There is a nationwide demand for Priyanka to come and lead. There are also demands for me to enter politics, but such things are for later. First, we should consider what is in the national interest.
Responding to MP Masood’s statement, BJP spokesperson Shahzad Poonawala said there is internal strife within the Congress party. Rahul Gandhi has lost the support of the public, party members and the Congress headquarters.
Priyanka’s stature is increasing due to these activities
- Priyanka’s keynote speech in the discussion on Vande Mataram in the Lok Sabha, a fitting reply to PM Modi, received widespread praise.
- She prominently raises issues related to her Wayanad constituency in the Lok Sabha; a clip of her seeking time from the Road Transport Minister goes viral.
- After the Parliament session, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s tea party featured candid discussions and laughter with the Prime Minister and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. A sign of healthy, cohesive politics, rather than Rahul’s usual vehement opposition.
- Former Congress MLA in Odisha, Mohammad Mokim, who had demanded that the leadership be handed over to Priyanka Gandhi, was expelled from the party.
- Priyanka is the General Secretary of the party but does not have any specific charge. She played a key role in her brother Rahul Gandhi’s victory in the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha elections.
- Her mannerisms, speech, attitude and new hairstyle are similar to her grandmother Indira Gandhi.
Speaking to students at a college here, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, who is on a visit to Germany, said, “The BJP has captured the institutional structure, intelligence, and investigative agencies in India. Democracy is under attack in India. We won in Haryana but were defeated due to problems in the electoral system. We have proven in the press conference that we won in Haryana and that the elections in Maharashtra were not fair.”
