Karnataka leadership tussle: DK Shivakumar attacks stability of power

Bengaluru: The tussle for the Chief Minister’s post has once again intensified in Karnataka politics. Recent statements by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar have created a stir within Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s faction.

On the occasion of Congress Foundation Day, Shivakumar stated unequivocally that power is not permanent, a statement that is being seen as a direct, harsh message to Siddaramaiah. Citing history, Deputy CM Shivakumar said that even powerful figures like Alexander the Great and Saddam Hussein did not last forever. There are two key implications behind his statement. Shivakumar is trying to convey that, after completing his two-and-a-half-year term (mid-term), it is time for a leadership change.

After meeting Mallikarjun Kharge, he stated that he is not just a leader who gives speeches, but has worked for the party at the grassroots level. This is an attempt to portray himself as a more loyal party cadre than Siddaramaiah. Discussions of a power-sharing agreement have been rife since the victory in the 2023 assembly elections. Political circles are abuzz with the possibility of a secret agreement between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar for two and a half years of Chief Ministership each. The Chief Minister has publicly announced that he will serve his full five-year term. He recently alluded to a secret agreement, though he did not share details.

While both leaders claim to be united on camera, Shivakumar’s comments clearly indicate that all is not well within the Congress. This leadership confusion is negatively impacting governance and the party’s image. All eyes are now on the Congress high command to see whether it will allow any major changes in early 2026 or maintain the status quo.
