BMC mayor to be woman, major decision on Maharashtra civic elections

Mumbai:  The post of Mayor in BMC will be given to a woman only. This has been made clear. According to this big update related to the civic elections in Maharashtra, BJP-Shiv Sena will jointly decide the name of the Mayor. Apart from BMC, the post of Mayor in Navi Mumbai will also be given to a woman, while in Thane the Mayor will be from the Scheduled Caste (SC) category. The Urban Development Department decided the reservation through lottery on Thursday, on the basis of which a woman will be crowned as the Mayor of BMC.

The Maharashtra government’s Urban Development Department on Thursday finalized the reservation system for various municipalities through a lottery system. Under the urban body rules, the post of mayor in all municipalities, including the BMC, is given to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, and women on a rotational basis. However, this reservation system is not pre-decided, and a lottery system has been created for this. Political parties cannot announce their candidates for the mayoral post until this lottery is drawn. After the 74th amendment of the Constitution, social representation has been mentioned for leadership in municipal bodies. This lottery system has been implemented to keep the mayoral election process fair.
