Central government’s big preparations: A special session may be called this month for an important bill

New Delhi:  Amid speculations over the conclusion of the current Budget Session of Parliament, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has clarified that the Budget Session will not be adjourned sine die today but will be adjourned for a few days and the members will meet again very soon. In the Rajya Sabha, he said, “We have some important issues, this has been shared with the opposition as well. In the next 2-3 weeks, we are going to bring a very important bill. Today the government will move a motion to adjourn the House and we will meet again soon; the purpose is known to the members.”

His statement came amid speculation and media reports that the government would not adjourn the current Budget Session of Parliament indefinitely and would resume proceedings in both Houses in a few days to introduce and pass the bill amending the women’s reservation system. According to the scheduled Budget Session of Parliament, today is the last day of the second phase of the Budget Session.

This issue arose in the Rajya Sabha at 2 pm when Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai stood up to move for discussion and passage of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026. Jairam Ramesh of the Congress, through Chairman CP Radhakrishnan, wanted to know what the government thought about the matters of the House’s proceedings. Whether the House would be held tomorrow as well or it would be adjourned sine die. On the Chair’s direction, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that we will meet again soon, within two to three weeks. This has a specific purpose.

On this, Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the House Mallikarjun Kharge and Jairam Ramesh said that the government is using this tactic to implement the Women’s Reservation Bill to take advantage of the assembly elections. They demanded that any meeting on this should be called only after the last phase of voting in the assembly elections on April 29. In fact, the opposition wants that any action on this issue will be taken only after the assembly elections going on in some states and union territories because BJP can take advantage of this in the upcoming elections.

Rijiju stated that he had written to and discussed the matter with all opposition parties, including the Congress. The Leader of the Opposition has responded to the letter. He appealed to the opposition to cooperate without engaging in politics, stating that the government has expressed a commitment to the country and women. Without offering any explanation, he stated that the government is time-constrained. Time is very short. This has nothing to do with electoral politics. According to an NDTV report, the government is planning to convene a three-day special session of Parliament between April 16 and 18. During this period, a Constitutional Amendment Bill is likely to be introduced, which will amend the Nari Shakti Vandan Act.
