Kolkata: A 20-year-old woman has accused two young men known to her of gangrape. According to the police, this incident happened on Friday when it was her birthday. It is alleged that the woman was called by her acquaintances on the pretext of celebrating her birthday and taken to a flat and raped. The victim, a resident of Haridevpur area, lodged a complaint at Haridevpur police station late on Saturday night. On the basis of which the police have registered a case and started searching for the accused.

Police said that the victim had met a young man named Chandan Malik a few months ago. He had introduced himself as the head of a big Durga Puja committee of South Kolkata. Through this, the victim got acquainted with a young man named Deep. Both had promised to connect the woman with the Puja committee. During this time, there was continuous conversation between the woman and the accused.

On Friday, the accused called the woman to a flat in Regent’s Park area to celebrate her birthday. A food and drink programme was organised there. It is alleged that when the woman wanted to return home, the two men stopped her, closed the door and gang-raped her. After the incident, the victim somehow reached home and told the whole thing to her family. After this, the family took her to the police station.

A senior Kolkata Police official said that a case has been registered on the basis of the complaint. Both the accused are absconding and their search is on. Police said that considering the seriousness of the case, a special team has been formed. This incident has shaken the city of Kolkata, especially because names related to Durga Puja committee have come to the fore in it.

Local people say that if people who have gained credibility in the society in the name of religious events are found to be involved in such crimes, then it is extremely shameful and worrying. The investigation of the case has been intensified and it is expected that the accused will be taken into custody soon.
