Another setback for the Grand Alliance in Bihar; RJD’s Shweta Suman’s nomination from Mohania cancelled

Patna:  The Grand Alliance’s troubles in the Bihar Assembly elections show no signs of abating. The Election Commission has now cancelled the nomination of Shweta Suman, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate from the Mohania assembly seat in Kaimur district. The Election Commission has declared her nomination invalid, citing her as a native of Uttar Pradesh.

Shweta Suman had filed her nomination from the Mohania seat, but the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) complained to the Election Commission that she was not a native of Bihar. The BJP alleged that Shweta was a resident of Chandauli district in Uttar Pradesh, and that a resident of Bihar was required to contest a reserved seat in Bihar.

The Election Commission took note of the BJP’s complaint and examined Shweta Suman’s documents. The investigation found that Shweta had also filed her nomination from Mohania in the 2020 elections, listing her address as Chandauli, Sakaldiha Assembly constituency in Uttar Pradesh. However, this time she provided an address in Bihar, but the Election Commission did not consider this sufficient evidence.
