Studies show that germs like E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria can thrive in refrigerators, leading to food poisoning, stomach upset, and the flu. A study revealed that salad drawers often contain 750 times more bacteria than the safest amount. Therefore, refrigerator drawers and shelves should be lightly cleaned every week. Spilled liquids should be cleaned, and stale food should be removed from the refrigerator.
A deep cleaning of the refrigerator should be done every three months. For a deep cleaning, remove food from the refrigerator and wipe the lids and bottoms of jars or containers with a damp cloth. Then, remove the shelves and drawers and clean the inside of the refrigerator with kitchen cleaner. Don’t forget the drain hole. If it’s blocked, it can cause a foul odor. Drain any water in the salad drawer. Remember to clean the handles, top, and sides of the refrigerator.
Washing Machines: Germs and bacteria can breed in washing machines. Studies have shown that 44 percent of washers contain bacteria called E. coli and Staphylococcus, which can cause blisters or abrasions on the skin. Washing machines should be cleaned monthly. Remove the detergent drawer from the machine and immerse it in warm soapy water. Once the water cools, use an old toothbrush to remove any dirt. Run the machine through an empty cycle to clean the main body. When the cycle is complete, open the machine door to allow the drum to air dry. Clean around the rubber seals with a damp cloth.
Grease and oil in ovens are a breeding ground for bacteria. One study found that oven handles harbor more bacteria than toilet seats. Oven doors should be cleaned weekly. Ovens should be cleaned monthly. Remove oven shelves and soak them in soapy water overnight. Place them in a sealed plastic bag for 30 minutes before scrubbing. Cover the heating elements and remove any food from the oven. Spray with cleaner, then clean with a damp sponge or warm, soapy water. Use a toothbrush to clean the corners, and be sure to clean the handle. Wipe the mixer from the inside with a dry cloth and tighten the nuts and screws.
