Patna: Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge paid a heartfelt tribute to Bihar Kesari Dr. Srikrishna Singh at a special event organized to commemorate his 139th birth anniversary. Remembering Shri Babu, Kharge said that he played a historic role in strengthening the foundations of democracy in Bihar and eliminating social inequality.
Kharge stated that Dr. Srikrishna Singh took unprecedented steps for the welfare of the oppressed, exploited, and underprivileged sections of society by abolishing the zamindari system, ushering in a new era of social justice in the state. Describing the sacred land of Bihar as the birthplace of democracy, he thanked the organizers for inviting him as the chief guest.
During his address, Mallikarjun Kharge highlighted the glorious history of Congress governments in Bihar. He recalled that the first government was formed in 1937, during British rule, under the leadership of Dr. Srikrishna Singh, who was then known as the “Premier.” This was followed by the formation of another government in 1947, following India’s independence.
After the first general elections under the Constitution of independent India, Shri Babu continued to serve as the Chief Minister of Bihar until January 3, 1961, making significant contributions to the state’s overall development.
At the event, Kharge strongly criticized the political ideology of his opponents, stating that lasting peace would remain difficult to achieve as long as divisive thinking continued to prevail in society. He alleged that opposition parties were attempting to undermine the historical legacy of the country’s great freedom fighters and prominent personalities, including Dr. Rajendra Prasad.
Taking a dig at senior political leaders such as Nitish Kumar, Kharge expressed disappointment that even leaders with socialist backgrounds had aligned themselves with forces whose ideologies, he claimed, threatened the social fabric of the country.
The Congress President urged the public to unite in response to the prevailing political and administrative situation in the country. He described the ongoing campaign to safeguard India’s democratic values and constitutional rights as a “second freedom struggle,” emphasizing that the people of Bihar must play a leading role in this movement.
Kharge also raised questions about previously announced investigations and the handling of cases filed against opposition leaders. He demanded fairness, transparency, and accountability in the investigative process, stressing the importance of upholding democratic principles and constitutional safeguards.
