Thalapathy Vijay distanced himself from the meeting, what caused the suspense?

New Delhi: There are many major political and technical reasons behind Tamil superstar and newly appointed Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Thalapathy Vijay’s party ‘Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’ (TVK) staying away from the important meeting of the India alliance held in New Delhi and not getting an invitation to him.

The main reasons for this political equation and the distance to victory can be understood as follows:

1. No representation (MPs) in Parliament
The Congress leadership and coalition leaders have clarified that the meeting, held at the Constitution Club in Delhi, was primarily for opposition parties represented in Parliament (Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha). The meeting was called to corner the government within Parliament and formulate a national-level strategy. Since Vijay’s party, TVK, recently won the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections and has not contested any Lok Sabha elections, it currently has no MPs in Parliament.

2. India not being a formal part of the alliance
Although Vijay’s party formed a government with the Congress following the Tamil Nadu assembly election results, the TVK has not officially become a part of the India alliance at the national level. This alliance between the Congress and the TVK is limited to state-level politics in Tamil Nadu. Therefore, a party that is not formally part of the national front was not included in this meeting.

3. Dispute between DMK and Congress
Following the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Congress abandoned its former ally, the DMK, and joined the government, supporting Thalapathy Vijay’s TVK. DMK chief M.K. Stalin described this move by Congress as a “stab in the back” and a “betrayal.” This political tension led the DMK to boycott the INDIA alliance meeting altogether and announce its separation from the alliance. In such a situation, if Congress had invited Vijay’s party to the meeting, the rift between regional parties within the alliance could have widened further.

4. Strategy to maintain independent political identity
Political analysts believe that Thalapathy Vijay doesn’t want to fully commit himself to any national alliance just yet. He wants to establish his party, TVK, as an independent and strong regional force in Tamil Nadu, not as a “junior partner” of a major national bloc. This is why he is currently distancing himself from national politics in Delhi and focusing on his new government in Chennai and the state’s law and order and development.
