New Delhi: India put up a resounding performance in the first ODI against England at Edgbaston, winning by six wickets. With this victory, Team India took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Captain Shubman Gill’s strong batting and Axar Patel’s all-round performance laid the foundation for India’s victory.
Chasing a target of 259, India captain Shubman Gill provided a solid start. He scored 80 runs from 75 balls, including 11 fours and a six. However, he suffered cramps and hamstring problems during the match, forcing him to retire hurt. Despite this, his innings kept India on track for victory.
After Gill’s departure, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar took charge. The two batsmen added an unbeaten 102-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Axar Patel remained unbeaten on 57 and Sundar on 52. Thanks to their brilliant batting, India reached the target in 45.2 overs.
England, who won the toss and elected to bat first, made a strong start, but the Indian bowlers made a brilliant comeback. At one point, England were 61 for no loss, but soon found themselves at 107 for six. Axar Patel was brilliant with the ball, taking four wickets. Prasidh Krishna and Gurnur Brar each took two wickets.
This victory was special in many ways. India last defeated England at Edgbaston in 2014, and since then, the hosts have won eight consecutive ODIs there. India broke England’s winning streak at this ground after 11 years.
Apart from this, this is India’s sixth consecutive win against England in ODI cricket, which has become India’s longest winning streak between the two teams.
This victory proved to be a confidence booster for the Indian team after disappointing performances in recent T20 matches against England and Ireland. The impressive performances of captain Gill and Axar Patel demonstrated that the team knows how to bounce back in big matches.
