New Delhi: There was a stir in Indian politics after Jagdeep Dhankhar suddenly resigned from the post of Vice President. This unexpected development created a keen interest in the post of Vice President not only in political circles but also among the general public. After a long period of speculation and discussions about the names of the candidates, India has finally got its 17th Vice President. National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate C.P. Radhakrishnan has won this prestigious post with a huge majority. On the other hand, opposition alliance UPA candidate Sudarshan Reddy had to face defeat.
A total of 767 MPs voted in this election, out of which 452 MPs voted in favour of Radhakrishnan, while Sudarshan Reddy got 300 votes. Thus Radhakrishnan won by a huge margin of 152 votes. 15 votes were found invalid in the election process, while a total of 13 MPs abstained from voting. These included 7 from BJD, 4 from BRS, 1 from Akali Dal and 1 independent MP. It is worth noting that there are a total of 788 seats in the Parliament, out of which 7 seats are currently vacant. Therefore, 781 MPs were expected to vote for the Vice President election.
This victory of C.P. Radhakrishnan is not only a big political signal for the NDA, but his role in the Rajya Sabha is going to be extremely important in the coming times, because the Vice President is also the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. There is enthusiasm among NDA supporters about Radhakrishnan, who has a clean image, disciplined political life and believes in senior leadership, while for the opposition, this defeat once again signals a rethinking of the strategy.
