Kannur: The fingers of a guest worker from Jharkhand who lost four fingers on his right hand after getting caught in a wood -cutting machine were stitched together at Aster MIMS, Kannur. The accident happened to 21-year-old Rupesh Kumar at his workplace. The accident occurred at 1.40 pm on January 10. He was then taken to another nearby hospital and from there to Aster MIMS, Kannur at around 8 pm. The injured person reached Aster MIMS about six hours after the accident. Then, an emergency surgery was performed under the leadership of the plastic surgery team led by Dr. Madhuchandra, Head of the Plastic Surgery Department, Dr. Nipun, Dr. Nibu Kuttappan, Dr. Arjun Unnikrishnan.
The surgery began at 8.30 pm. Roopesh Kumar’s fingers were stitched together using a highly complex microvascular surgical technique. The surgery was performed by restoring the delicate nerves, arteries, blood vessels and tendons of each finger. Dr. Madhuchandra, who led the surgery, said that it is hoped that this will help restore the mobility of the fingers. If such accidents are noticed, it is important to take them to a hospital with plastic surgery facilities as soon as possible. The severed body part should be wrapped in a clean cloth, sealed in a polythene cover and covered with ice on both sides. In the evening, the cells in that area will die and the surgery will become complicated, said Dr. Nipun.
