Congress’s electoral bets in Tamil Nadu: How many seats will the party contest?

Tamil Nadu. Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in Tamil Nadu this year. As such, political parties have begun their preparations. Amid the election preparations, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram met with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin. According to reports, seat-sharing was discussed in detail during the meeting, which lasted about an hour. However, P Chidambaram did not speak to the media after this meeting at CM Stalin’s residence.

Till now, AICC in-charge of Tamil Nadu, Girish Chodankar, was negotiating with DMK as the head of the Congress seat-sharing committee, according to sources, MK Stalin had raised objections over his tone, following which, changing its strategy, the Congress high command sent senior Congress leader from Tamil Nadu, P Chidambaram, to negotiate seat-sharing with DMK for the upcoming assembly elections.

According to sources, Congress, which initially insisted on a power-sharing demand, has now been limited to an increased number of seats. Initially demanding 41 seats, Congress has now come down to 36, but the DMK has clearly stated that it is in no position to offer even one more seat than the 25 it was offered last time. If Congress wishes, it can offer an additional Rajya Sabha seat.

Following today’s meeting between Chief Minister MK Stalin and Chidambaram, sources indicate that the DMK has made a final offer of 29 seats and two Rajya Sabha seats to the Congress. A decision on this is expected soon after consultation with the party’s top leadership. It’s worth noting that on Monday, the DMK bluntly told the Congress that if it doesn’t agree to the 25 seats it’s offering, it is free to leave the alliance.
