Kolkata: The political atmosphere has heated up ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections. The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party have approached the Election Commission, accusing each other of hate speech and inflammatory statements.
On Sunday, the TMC submitted a written complaint to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accusing a BJP candidate of making derogatory and threatening statements against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Hours later, the BJP retaliated by filing a complaint with the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal, alleging that a TMC MP had made derogatory and hateful statements against Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Voting in the state is scheduled for two phases on April 23 and 29, with the counting of votes taking place on May 4. The increasing rhetoric and complaints ahead of the elections have indicated that this election could be a highly contested and controversial one.
