Assam government takes major decision ahead of cabinet expansion, portfolios assigned to ministers

Dispur: Administrative work has picked up pace in Assam following the formation of the new government. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has allocated portfolios among his four key cabinet ministers. The official list has been released after receiving approval from the Raj Bhavan. For now, the Chief Minister has retained several important portfolios, which may be assigned to new ministers during a future cabinet expansion.

Four experienced leaders who took oath alongside the Chief Minister have been assigned portfolios based on their regional and social influence. Veteran BJP leader and former Union Minister Rameshwar Teli has been assigned key portfolios such as Labor Welfare, Tea Tribes, Tribal Welfare, and Transformation and Development. Meanwhile, Ajanta Neog, who held the Finance portfolio in the previous government, has been given the charge of the Women and Child Development and Tourism departments.

Leaders of the coalition partners in the government have also been given important portfolios. Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Atul Bora has been given the responsibility of Panchayat and Rural Development, Assam Accord Implementation, Border Protection, and Excise departments. Meanwhile, Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) leader Charan Boro has maintained his old dominance; like last time, he has been given the responsibility of Transport and Bodoland Welfare departments. Special care has been taken in these appointments to represent different communities and regions of Assam.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has clarified that the portfolios not currently allocated to any minister will remain with him for the time being. He has indicated that the cabinet will be expanded after the first session of the Assembly concludes on May 26, and several new faces may find a place in it. It is noteworthy that the BJP-led NDA won a landslide victory in the Assam Assembly elections, winning 102 out of 126 seats, after which Sarma was sworn in as Chief Minister for a second consecutive term on May 12, 2026.
