A compelling new voice in contemporary fiction emerges with the release of Before We Were Women, a debut novel by Sunita Reddy, M.D. Now available in hardcover, paperback, and Kindle formats.
The book is already gaining attention as a deeply moving and thought-provoking read—and is being hailed as a must-read selection.
At the heart of the novel lies an emotionally gripping premise: Three women. Three secrets. One summer that changes everything.”
Before We Were Women follows Anita Kumar, Ashley Spady, and Robin Zymanski—three women navigating complex personal journeys. Anita grapples with the lingering pain of a teenage pregnancy that altered her life, while Ashley struggles to break free from cycles of violence and fear. Robin, an adopted young woman, faces uncertainty about her future, and seeks answers about her identity and purpose.
Described as “a moving novel of resilience and sisterhood—about confronting the past, reclaiming one’s voice, and discovering that family can be found in the most unexpected places,” the book resonates with readers seeking emotional depth and authenticity.
Its themes of forgiveness, identity, and empowerment make it both timely and universally relatable.
Author Sunita Reddy, an obstetrician and gynecologist, practices in Dayton, Ohio. She has spent years working closely with women facing life-altering challenges. A graduate of Kakatiya Medical College, Warangal, India, a valedictorian of her class with a record 13 gold medals, she is also an accomplished Kuchipudi dancer, having placed first in the state-wide competition in Andhra Pradesh at the age 12. Through this experience, at an early age, she learnt the art of storytelling through abhinayas and dance-ballets.
Those early lessons in storytelling blossomed into a career in writing. Before We Were Women is her debut novel. Her professional background weaves the realism and emotional nuance of her characters, in a compelling style.
In discussing her inspiration, Reddy emphasizes the importance of resilience and human connection. The characters in her novel reflect real-world struggles, from “teenage pregnancy and autonomy” to “domestic violence and generational silence,” offering readers a lens into experiences that are often difficult, yet necessary to confront.
The narrative underscores the transformative power of connection, reinforcing the idea that identity is shaped by both personal choices and shared experiences. By addressing these themes, the novel not only tells a story but also sparks meaningful conversations, hence the novel’s strong appeal for group discussions and book clubs.
Reddy’s writing style is both accessible and evocative, focusing on personal growth and empowerment emphasizing “reclaiming your voice,” a message that resonates strongly in today’s cultural landscape.
As a debut novel, Before We Were Women marks a significant entry into contemporary women’s fiction. Its authentic storytelling positions it as a standout release of 2026, inspiring its readers to examine their own journeys and relationships—while encouraging its female readers to finally establish themselves as ‘Women’, confident and fulfilled.
The novel entertains, and challenges readers to reflect on one’s life experiences and connections, long after the final page.
