Sambit Patra Alleges Attempt to Weaken Democracy to Bring Rahul Gandhi to Power

New Delhi: Ahead of a scheduled protest march by opposition parties against the Election Commission, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a scathing attack on the Congress and the opposition alliance during a press conference. BJP national spokesperson and MP Sambit Patra alleged that the opposition’s campaign was part of a politically motivated conspiracy aimed at gaining power.

Addressing the press conference, Patra accused opposition parties, particularly the Congress, of orchestrating a calculated campaign to bring about a change of government and install Rahul Gandhi in power. He alleged that India’s democratic institutions and constitutional bodies were being systematically targeted to achieve this objective.

The BJP MP claimed that this was not a recent political strategy. According to him, the Congress has spent years attempting to establish and relaunch Rahul Gandhi as a prominent political leader, but these efforts have repeatedly failed. Patra alleged that, following these setbacks, the Congress and its allies appeared determined to pursue their political agenda, even at the risk of creating an atmosphere of unrest and instability in the country.

Questioning the opposition’s proposed protest march, Patra claimed that institutions and organisations such as the Indian Army, the Supreme Court, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), and the Election Commission, along with Hindu society and electronic voting machines (EVMs), had previously been subjected to politically motivated criticism and attacks.

He further alleged that the Election Commission had become the latest target of sustained opposition criticism over the past several weeks. Expressing concern over the planned demonstration, Patra warned that the opposition might once again attempt to create unrest in the country under the pretext of protesting against the Election Commission.

Referring to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Patra accused opposition parties of spreading misinformation and misleading claims among the public. He alleged that the Congress and its allies were deliberately creating confusion about the electoral process to undermine public confidence in constitutional institutions.

Patra also referred to a petition filed before the Supreme Court seeking the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner. He stated that a notice had been issued in accordance with the established legal procedure and that the parties concerned would have an opportunity to present their arguments before the court.

Emphasising the importance of following due legal process, Patra said the matter should be examined and decided in accordance with the law. However, he accused the opposition of attempting to politicise the judicial proceedings for electoral and political advantage.

The BJP spokesperson maintained that constitutional institutions should not be undermined for political purposes and accused the opposition of seeking to weaken public trust in India’s democratic framework.

The allegations reflect the escalating political confrontation between the ruling BJP and opposition parties over the functioning of the Election Commission, the revision of electoral rolls, and the independence of constitutional institutions.
