Senior Doctor at Kozhikode Private Hospital Arrested in MDMA Case; Arrests Based on Prior Statements, Phone Records, and Financial Transactions

Vaythiri: In connection with the seizure of MDMA from two Tamil Nadu natives during a vehicle inspection at Lakkidi, Wayanad, a senior doctor from a private super specialty hospital in Kozhikode has been arrested. Dr. K.N. Mohammed Fabin (41), head of the Emergency Critical Care Department at the hospital and a native of Morayur, Malappuram, was taken into custody by the Vaythiri police. The arrest followed a detailed investigation focusing on statements from previously arrested suspects, phone conversations, WhatsApp messages, and bank transactions.

The accused was produced before the court and remanded to custody for 14 days. The incident that triggered the case occurred on the 22nd of last month. During a vehicle check conducted by the Vaythiri police in Lakkidi, Wayanad, two Tamil Nadu natives were caught with 8.52 grams of MDMA. The first to be arrested were K.E. Naufal (50) from Panthallur Erumad Kallenkal and K.M. Mohammed Nafis (37) from Gudalur Rajagopalapuram. Reports indicate they were under the influence of drugs during the vehicle inspection.

Following their detention, police launched a thorough investigation into the source of the drugs and the individuals involved in transporting them. It was during detailed questioning of Naufal and Nafis that the doctor's name surfaced in the case, according to police statements. The suspects claimed that the seized MDMA belonged to Dr. Mohammed Fabin and that they regularly consumed drugs together with him, the investigation team clarified.

Based on these statements, police expanded their investigation into the doctor's involvement. Authorities examined phone records and financial transactions to determine the nature of the relationship between the doctor and the suspects, and whether any drug-related dealings had taken place. The investigation did not rely solely on the suspects' statements; other evidence was collected before proceeding with the arrest.

Particularly, the team focused on communications between the first accused, K.E. Naufal, and Dr. Mohammed Fabin. Authorities obtained details of their phone calls, WhatsApp chats, and money transfers through bank accounts. This information was used to clarify the nature of the doctor’s relationship with the accused in the narcotics case and to verify the suspects’ statements. The financial and communication data proved crucial to the investigation, although the exact amounts involved and the detailed contents of the exchanges have not been disclosed.

The joint investigation was led by the District Narcotics Squad under the leadership of Narcotic Cell and Gender Justice Deputy Superintendent of Police Manoharan Thachampatti, along with Vaythiri Circle Inspector P.G. Ramjith.

Information obtained from the first arrested suspects helped the police locate the doctor’s residence and other details. Mohammed Fabin, originally from Morayur, Malappuram district, currently resides in the Mukkom area of Kozhikode. At the time of the arrest, he was working as the head of the Emergency Critical Care department at the private super specialty hospital in Kozhikode.

Based on the evidence, the police detained Dr. Mohammed Fabin near a rented house in Manassery, Kozhikode. He was subsequently arrested after questioning and other legal procedures. The arrested doctor was produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Kalpetta, which remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days. Following this, he was transferred to the Vaythiri sub-jail.

The arrest of a senior doctor entrusted with a critical treatment section at a private hospital in connection with a drug case has drawn significant attention. However, the allegations against the doctor remain part of the ongoing investigation. The final conclusions about his alleged connection to the suspects and his involvement with the seized MDMA will be made based on further investigation and evidence presented in court.

More clarity is awaited regarding the source of the drugs, the nature of transactions between the accused, and whether others are involved in the case.
