Babri Masjid vs Ram Temple: Don’t forget facts and history

There are some basic facts that should not be forgotten when the Ram Temple is erected in Ayodhya instead of the Babri Masjid. The temple, which is being built on the site of the mosque, has a different historical foundation. It was not even a part of Hindu consciousness until 1949. The rivalry between Bairagi Brahmins and Muslims who lived in Hanuman Garhi dates back to 1855. But at no point in the feud did the Bairagi Vaishnava Brahmins come up with stories of a connection between the Babri Masjid and Ramjanmasthan. Although the Bairagis captured the mosque where the Muslims had taken refuge, they did not occupy it or lay claim to it. They were retreating to Hanuman Garhi. Even during the investigation by the Awadh court, no one said that there was once a temple at the place where the mosque is located. A century ago, in March 1921, Gandhi was taken to Ayodhya. His words about this visit were: “On my arrival at Ayodhya, I was taken to a small temple which stands on the spot where Sri Ramachandra is believed to have been born”(Navajeevan, March 20, 1921). According to the account given to him then, there was a temple believed to be the birthplace of Ramachandran. The place he mentioned is not related to the place where the Ramlalla idol was illegally installed in December 1949.

In a Supreme Court judgment on November 9, 2019, it was pointed out that there are multiple places believed to be the birthplace of Lord Rama. Yet the verdict that day marked a reversal from a century-old conviction. Page 929 of the judgment states, “One of us, concurring with the above reasons and propositions, has recorded certain reasons as to whether the disputed building is also the birthplace of Ramlallah according to the belief of Hindu devotees.” The central issue of the case was the dispute over the ownership of the immovable property, the mosque. But the Allahabad High Court gave priority to faith over law. The Supreme Court also followed the same path. Entered Hinduism and its holy cities with extreme religious love. The court’s conclusions were also based on the Hindu faith and the schools of thought based on it. Pramanas are religious texts, either verbal proofs or full of uncertainties. (AG Noorani-Ayodhya Judgment 2019: Justice Denied). On September 30, 1990, LK Advani said: ‘No one can prove that this is the birthplace of Ram. It’s a matter of faith.’ (The Independent, 11 October 1990).
