America takes a tough stand on cyber security; bans Chinese app DeepSeek

Washington DC: DeepSeek, a Chinese AI app, has recently become a topic of discussion in the technology world. It has even overtaken OpenAI’s ChatGPT on Apple’s App Store. But with its popularity, concerns about security and ethics are also increasing. Recently, the US Navy has strictly warned its members not to use DeepSeek.

The US Navy has sent an email to its employees asking them to avoid using DeepSeek AI. The Navy has warned that this model can be risky from a security point of view, so it should not be downloaded or installed either for work or personal use. DeepSeek is an open-source AI model, meaning anyone can use it for free.

The special thing about this is that this AI was developed at a cost of just 6 million dollars (about Rs 50 crore), which is much less than giants like OpenAI and Google. This success of DeepSeek also affected the financial markets, when the news came that the company developed this AI at a very low cost, the shares of AI chip making companies like Nvidia and Broadcom fell.

A serious warning was given about DeepSeek in the US Navy email. The email said, ‘We want to bring an important information to your attention, which is related to the new AI model DeepSeek. It is important that no employee uses this AI model, whether it is related to work or for personal use. ‘ It is clear from this that America is cautious about this Chinese AI app and does not want to compromise on its security standards.

DeepSeek has recently received its first legal notice. A European consumers group called Euroconsumers has filed a complaint against DeepSeek in collaboration with Italy’s Data Protection Agency (DPA). European agencies are concerned about DeepSeek’s data management and consider it a violation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Italy’s Data Protection Agency (DPA) has sent a letter to DeepSeek and asked for a response within 20 days. The DPA warned, ‘The data of millions of Italians is at risk due to DeepSeek. We need an immediate response on this.’
