Congress fulfilled its election promise, increased OBC reservation from 23 to 42 percent

Telangana: Telangana’s Revanth Reddy government has increased the scope of reservation in the state from 23 percent to 42 percent. For this, two bills were passed in the Telangana Assembly. Under this, provision of 42 percent reservation has been made for backward classes in government jobs, educational institutions and urban and rural local body elections. After passing from the Assembly, the government has sent this bill for the approval of the Governor.

According to a media report, after the Zero Hour, the Telangana Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Reservation of Seats in Educational Institutions and Reservation of Appointments to Posts in Services under the State) Bill, 2025 and the Telangana Backward Classes (Reservation of Seats in Rural and Urban Bodies) Bill, 2025 were introduced in the House. Apart from this, another bill was introduced in the House which aims to approve sub-caste reservation for backward castes. The state government has taken this step a few months after conducting a caste survey. In this, the population of backward castes was reported to be 56.33 percent. Which also includes Muslim caste groups. Opposition parties like BJP and Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) also supported the bill in the Assembly.

Chief Minister Reddy said that the previous government had sent a proposal to the Governor to increase the scope of reservation for backward classes to 37 percent. But the present government is withdrawing the earlier proposal and sending a new proposal. He further said that as the leader of the House, he will lead the effort to achieve 42 percent reservation for backward classes. He further said that leaders of all parties are welcome to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to press for this reservation. Reservation can be implemented only when the Center includes the new reservation allocation in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution.

Revanth Reddy also requested Union Minister G Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay Kumar to seek time to meet PM Modi. He also said that Rahul Gandhi will raise the issue in Parliament. The Chief Minister has written a letter to PM Narendra Modi on this issue and sought time to meet him. BRS has also supported this bill. All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Akbaruddin Owaisi has objected to the current form of reservation. He said that what is being implemented is not Muslim reservation. Rather it is reservation for backward classes among Muslims. Congress should stop dividing the country on the basis of religion.

After the OBC reservation was passed by the assembly, the reservation limit in Telangana has reached 62 percent. This is a violation of the 50 percent reservation limit set by the Supreme Court. To implement this reservation, amendment in the Constitution and approval of the Central Government will be required. In the country, only Tamil Nadu has more than 50 percent reservation. Which is protected under the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution.
