Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee has suffered a major strategic setback. Her close confidante and a prominent party leader, Chandrima Bhattacharya, has resigned from all party posts with immediate effect. By sending an official letter to Banerjee, she not only relinquished the post of state president but also completely distanced herself from all other important responsibilities associated with the party. This sudden decision has created a stir in the state’s political circles, as no official statement has been issued by the Trinamool Congress leadership on this matter yet.
In her resignation letter, Chandrima Bhattacharya clearly stated that she wishes to relinquish the position of State President of the All India Trinamool Congress, which was assigned to her at a high-level meeting held in Kalighat on June 3, 2026. She has also decided to relinquish all her roles in the party’s internal organizations. She also clarified in the letter that she is immediately relinquishing her financial responsibilities as the authorized signatory of the accounts held by the All India Trinamool Congress and its affiliated wings in various banks.
Chandrima Bhattacharya, who holds one of the most diplomatically important positions within and outside the party, has also announced her withdrawal from the election-related legal process. In a letter, she stated that she will no longer act as an authorized person on behalf of Mamata Banerjee and the party before the Election Commission of India (ECI) and is withdrawing her legal consent to this effect. This is being seen as a major organizational loss for the TMC in terms of election management.
What’s most surprising is that Chandrima Bhattacharya didn’t mention the real reasons behind her sudden resignation in her letter. Given that she has always been one of Mamata Banerjee’s most trusted figures and troubleshooters, this move is being considered extremely surprising. Political analysts believe that once the contradictions or reasons behind this major decision become clear, it will have a direct and far-reaching impact on the future politics of West Bengal and the party’s internal dynamics.
