Pune : Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, participated in a special program of the “Schools’ Echoes” series held in Pune . The event, attended only by female students, was met with enthusiasm as soon as Rahul Gandhi arrived on stage. In his address, he stated that for India’s true progress, it is essential for women to be free and independent. He clarified that despite their association with fathers, husbands, or sons, women have their own distinct and independent identities.
Rahul Gandhi stated that he had not come for a political speech, but to learn about the views and aspirations of the students. During the interaction, he asked a student about patriarchal thinking and attempts to control women. The student replied that she objects whenever attempts are made to limit her to just “a woman,” because she is, in the first instance, an independent human being.
Discussing rights to family property, Rahul Gandhi said that while men’s demands are considered rights, women’s demands are considered a mere vestige. Another participant pointed out that society often expects women to shoulder the entire responsibility of professional responsibilities, as well as household chores and childcare.
Rahul Gandhi said that when a country’s strength is discussed, military power is often mentioned, whereas in reality, the dreams of India’s 700 million women are the country’s core strength. He criticized the view of ancient texts that portrays women as dependent on someone or something at every age. He said that women do not need anyone’s support, but rather have their own unique identity.
The administration granted approval for this event in Pune based on 30 conditions. It is worth noting that under the “Speak the Students” campaign, Rahul Gandhi has previously interacted with students in Kota , Dehradun , and Prayagraj, discussing the education system and youth-related issues.
