New Delhi: Normal life has been severely affected in the national capital Delhi and the entire NCR (National Capital Region) due to torrential rains on Saturday. Heavy waterlogging in many major areas of Delhi, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Faridabad brought the movement of vehicles on the roads to a halt. The worst situation due to the rain was seen in Gurugram, where apart from the main roads, residential areas were also flooded.
Heavy waterlogging on the flyover near the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi slowed down vehicular traffic. Meanwhile, waterlogging was severe on Sector 22 Bazaar Road, Sohna Road, and Thirty-Second Avenue Road in Gurugram. In Sector 4, an ambulance carrying a body got stuck in deep water, causing severe difficulties for the ambulance driver and passengers. Local residents say this posh area, formerly developed by HUDA, gets submerged even during light rain.
In Ghaziabad, waterlogging on the main road from Lal Kuan towards the city caused a long traffic jam, while the underpass connecting Bamheta village to Bulandshahr industrial area was blocked due to waterlogging. Similarly, in Faridabad, commuters faced problems due to waterlogging on the 60 feet road at Chacha Chowk and outside the Ballabhgarh bus depot. To maintain traffic order in the entire NCR, traffic policemen were seen on alert at intersections and sensitive waterlogged points.
To assess the situation arising due to rain in Delhi, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta conducted a surprise inspection of the affected areas on Saturday. She visited the areas around Sadbhavna Park in East Delhi and reviewed the drainage system. The Chief Minister gave strict instructions to the officials to immediately install water pumps and deploy other resources to remove water from the roads. A statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office said that during the monsoon, all the concerned departments should work in coordination with each other so that there is no waterlogging in any area and the people of Delhi do not have to face any inconvenience.
