New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its attack on the Congress over allegations of sexual harassment involving Congress MP Akoijam and students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The BJP has taken a strong stance on the issue, accusing the Congress leadership of maintaining silence over serious allegations concerning the safety, dignity and rights of women.A delegation of the BJP Mahila Morcha met the Lok Sabha Speaker on Wednesday and demanded immediate action in the matter. The delegation urged the Speaker to refer the allegations against the Congress MP to the Ethics Committee of Parliament for a thorough examination. It also demanded that the possibility of terminating the MP’s Lok Sabha membership be considered in light of the seriousness of the allegations.
The BJP has been consistently targeting the Congress over the controversy, accusing the principal opposition party of adopting double standards on issues concerning women’s safety and dignity. According to BJP leaders, the Congress frequently raises questions about women’s rights and security but allegedly remains silent when similar accusations are directed against individuals associated with its own party.
BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj launched a sharp attack on the Congress leadership, alleging that the party has repeatedly sided with those accused of exploiting women. She questioned the Congress’s commitment to women’s empowerment and accused it of selectively raising issues based on political convenience rather than principles.
Meanwhile, BJP Mahila Morcha National President and MP Roop Kumari Chaudhary directly questioned senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra over their silence on the controversy. She asked why Rahul Gandhi, who frequently speaks about justice, equality and constitutional values, had not publicly addressed the allegations involving a member of his own party.
Chaudhary also took a dig at Priyanka Gandhi, referring to her well-known slogan, “Ladki Hoon, Lad Sakti Hoon” (I am a girl, I can fight). She questioned why Priyanka Gandhi, who has consistently projected herself as a strong advocate of women’s rights, had not come forward to speak in support of the young women allegedly affected by the incident.
The BJP Mahila Morcha maintained that allegations involving the dignity and safety of women should be treated with the utmost seriousness, irrespective of the political affiliations of those involved. The party demanded a fair and impartial examination of the matter and appropriate action in accordance with parliamentary rules and established procedures.
The controversy has added another dimension to the ongoing political confrontation between the BJP and the Congress, with the ruling party seeking answers from the opposition leadership over its position on women’s safety and accountability.
