Nashra Naeem, a member of the Fraternity Movement's central committee, has been elected vice-president of the students' union at Aligarh Muslim University, becoming the first woman to hold the position in the university's history, according to the Malayalam report.
Naeem won by a margin of 1,273 votes in an election involving an electorate of more than 20,000 students. The student-union election was restored after eight years, following sustained student protests in recent months calling for voting to resume.
Originally from Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, Naeem is a law student at Aligarh Muslim University. She has been active in student campaigns at the university, including the recent movement demanding that student-union elections be held.
The Fraternity Movement described the result as a historic victory. The election marks a milestone for women's representation in the university's student leadership.
