New Delhi: Political tensions have intensified over demands for action against Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam in connection with an alleged sexual harassment case involving female students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). A delegation of women BJP MPs met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and submitted a memorandum demanding strict action against the MP.
The letter submitted by the delegation claims that 11 JNU students had filed sexual harassment complaints against Akoijam. According to the delegation, following an investigation by the university’s internal committee, the administration issued an order dismissing Akoijam from service on October 9, 2026. The letter also mentions that an FIR has been registered in connection with the case.
The women BJP MPs strongly objected to the Congress leadership’s silence on the issue. They said that a political party that advocates for the dignity and safety of women should clearly state its position on such serious allegations against one of its own MPs. They described the incident as a matter concerning women’s safety, the dignity of female students, and the high ethical standards expected of public representatives.
Meanwhile, Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has questioned his dismissal, describing the action as completely unjustified. A police investigation is currently underway, and a final judicial decision on the serious allegations is still pending.
